Porsche are back for the overall win in 2014!!
This should be good. Do they know regulation changes are coming? They wouldn't be back unless they thought they could compete with Audi and pug.

Porsche will return to the Le Mans 24 Hours with its own LMP1 prototype, the 16-time overall winner announcing on Thursday a completely new car for the 2014 edition of the historic race.
Porsche, the most successful manufacturer in Le Mans, last won the event in 1998 in the GT1 class.
"Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand," said Matthias Muller, President of the Executive Board at Porsche AG.
"So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing. Porsche's successes in Le Mans are unrivalled.
"We want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory."

Diesel / Petrol / Hybrid ?
Where does this leave Audi...
According to Adrian Newey, the reason Formula 1 was looking at 4 cylinder Turbos was that Audi wanted them as a condition of entry, but apparently they have given up on that (hence the recent change to V6 Turbo engines)

Hybrid makes most sense, especially taking into account their N24 entry. Very encouraging to see, especially if the rumoured Japanese involvement in endurance racing is confirmed as well.
It also appears that Porsche are 'doing it right' by leaving themselves a good lead in time to fully test and develop the car/s. It'll be interesting to see how many evolutions they go through.

It is funny that VAG should field another entry from one of its brands, I was talking to my brother and mates whilst we were in Le Mans this year about VAG entering another one of its brands with essentially the same car underneath as the Audi but with a different body and a petrol engine/hybrid/other as it wouldn't cost a huge amount more but it would make a greater spectacle and would be great for publicity. Maybe they were listening

That was my first thought, an elegant exit strategy for Audi, but the statement Audi have given SpeedTV would suggest otherwise;Audi said:

which rather promises that we may be entering another golden age of serious manufacturer participation in endurance racing.Porsche may not be family owned now and they may have to share a bit of development between the new VAG family for the road cars, but I don't think for one second Porsche would let their motorsport dept become a joke.
I believe and hope the lmp car that rolls out will be all Porsche.
And the rumour mill is also apparently suggesting ferrari could be back for overall victory!

I think it could be called a success, yes. It won its class at Le Mans twice, in 2007 it out performed the LMP1 cars in the ALMC on a regular basis (taking more overall wins), and was a success right up until 2010 when it fell out of favour, mainly due to rules. It was eligible for this years Le Mans but only in LMP1, not P2 due to cost.Overall a very successful car.
This can only be good news for sports car racing. Not sure about hybrid but hey, I guess Le Mans has always been about new tech. Would love to see Ferrari return to the top end of sports car too. Like Porsche they have spent too long playing in GT. I guess they're priorty is F1 though.
Still, be great to see Porsche, Audi & those cheating cheese eating surrender monkeys at Peuogeot go head to head. Maybe see Henri get some factory backing and enter a competitive car too?
