2003ish Mazda 1.6 diesel (PSA) engines

My brother has just been to look at a 90,000 mile 53 plate Mazda 3 1.6 diesel, which seems very tidy and surprisingly cheap (3k)

Me being the car person in the family he's asked for my opinion, and all I can think of is "it's a PSA engine... RUN!!!" but I'm not entirely sure why I have that opinion. Nor has googling brought up anything major, other than the EGR design was rubbish.

Am I wrong in thinking that engine is a ticking time bomb?

Its actually a really good engine, very pleasant to drive and returns decent MPG. I was under the impression it was built in partnership with Ford and PSA. Used in a lot of cars.

Pretty good car and engine tbh. My dad had the 1.6 petrol version and it was a nice car except the petrol 1.6 is pretty gutless.

I thought they were all due to explode at 90,000 miles. I like being wrong

I'd be more worried about rust

It's actually a pretty good engine.

Certainly good enough for: Ford, Citroën, Peugeot, Mazda, Volvo, Mini to name but a few

As you quite rightly say, EGR valves have a habit of sticking, but that's about it
