Nitrogen in road car tyres - rip-off?

I had to smile (and politely decline) when I was asked by the fitter if wanted the two new rear tyres on my 136,000 mile A4 TDI filled with nitrogen. What's the point? We used to use it in race car tyres to maintain pressure but in a road car, especially a diesel estate it strikes me as just another rip-off? (the same tyre supplier advertises 'free fitting' in his Ebay listing but tells you it's £6.50 a tyre once they're on your car...).

It's not a rip off if you very rarely check your tyres like most of the masseswho seem to think the pressures are set for life. For anyone on here though, I would suggest that yes, it's a waste of money, I'll just check my pressures regularly thanks.
