Best barging for £2000...?

I'm shortly to be selling one of my cars and freeing up some money to pick up a daily. I previously owned a W124 Merc estate and I loved it.. it was reliable and very comfortable on a drive, not to mention ridiculously spacious.

I'm looking to pick up something similar again and just wondered if anyone had other suggestions for stuff I might not have thought of, or for things which are an absolute bargain right now...

So far on my hit list..

• Another W124 (Saloon or Estate)
• BMW E39 5 Series
• Volvo V70 (T5..?)
• VW Passat..?

Fuel economy isn't a big deal.. I live close to work, and can cycle if the car is out of action for whatever reason. But would ideally like something that isn't high maintenance / unreliable.. hence thinking Volvo or older Merc!

I'd also say as a comfy V8 powered option a UK spec RHD Cadillac Seville STS is well worth a look too.

Never had much love for the LS400... might be a great barge but really isn't much of a looker.

Jags.. I guess I would consider something like an XJ6.. what are they like in the reliability stakes though?

Not a looker but super smooth and super reliable.

Decent W124/W201's are getting harder to find now as so many are exported to Cyprus & the third world. Spend ages looking for a nice 300D but they just don't exist any more

I know nothing about Jags what so ever but that seems like a hell of a lot of low mileage V6 for less than 2K!

My favourite barge was a manual Jag XJ6 (X300). Still wish I never sold it.

3 things to watch out for; rust, corrosion and iron oxide.

You should be able to be insured on any car you like for a reasonable amount

Volvo S80 T6 is very good value for money. 2.8 twin turbo as well I think

Audi A8 is the best option for £2000! I bought a Y plate for £2250, ran it for 12 pain free months then sold for £2650.
More reliable than most, electric head rests!!
3.7 rather than 2.8 or 4.2 and you'll get late 20s mpg.
