I need to cover an area 10m by 3m with a membrane and then bark.

Does anyone know how to work out how much Bark I would need?

Funny but that has actually helped me.

If I want it 5cm deep, it would be 30 divided by 20.

1.5 cubic metres should do it.

Agreed??

At 50mm deep would be 1.5 Cubic Metres = 1500 Litres.

You'd want it more than 5cm deep and it also compacts down.

I'd work on 20cm deep and it'll end up about 10

True

And then the blackbirds come and throw it all over the place.

Funnily enough I've just done a play area that was 9m x 7m and we used 2.1 tonnes. Feel free to divide accordingly, was the same depth.

If your stuck I can try and find the place we bought it from.

You'll need to top it up every year too as it will rot down.

How windy is the area? We had a play area covered with bark and it very quickly ended up everywhere but the play area due to the wind being funnelled between buildings. Complete disaster.

Perhaps also worth mentioning that bark can smell. I moved into a house with quite a lot of bark and (I suppose as it decomposed) the smell was quite strong.
It wasn't necessarily unpleasant - just very 'barky' - but it was noticeable, and I would not have wanted it close to a patio where I was eating for instance.

Definitely this.
over the past few years I have brought in lorry loads of bark to fill borders etc and no matter how thick it seems when it goes down, the next year it will be half as thick. To be fair, it takes longer to compact after the 1st year but best advice would be to work out how much you need then more than double it. Thick bark areas look great. Patchy scabby bark areas look grotty.
