Does it cost an MOT tester anything to print a certificate?

I ask because my local tester has and advised there was a £10 charge. Fortunately I found my MOT certificate so no longer need it.

Well even if his paper and ink was free (I'm guessing the MOT paper must be special and probably not cheap), then in the time he might spend looking up your details and printing it off he could have been repairing someone else's car. So he can't do it for free can he?

It's around £2 to £3 per test. I don't think we get charged for a duplicate but there is the hassle of the tester's time etc. As for the paper being special, it aint and from any time shortly expect your certificate to be printed on plain paper and soon you'll get advisories and pass on the same A4 sheet.

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't word my op very well. What I was trying to get at was that I would go and pay a tenner to the tester if that's what VOSA charge him to print the cert. Evidently they don't. I'll call him to tomorrow to say don't bother printing it.

Why should they do it for free? You lost it, not them.

I have found my original. I have no issue with the charge.

I mislaid a handwritten certificate a few years ago. The charge for writing a replacement was half the cost of a full test, then about £26, IIRC.

Of course the original turned up a little while later.

Couple of years ago needed a replacement, Kwik Fit replaced it for free.

All good, but wished they'd told me I could have got it at any Kwik Fit before I drove there. Told them on the phone it was a 2 hour drive, got there and they asked me why I just didn't go to a different branch. :@

For future reference, you can go to any test station.. Just need your V5.
