Illegal High-Speed Road Races i.e. original Cannonball

I have been watching some footage recently of attempts to cross the US at record speed as well as across the US road races not these tame timed events that take place for an hour or two at a track but sheer all out road racing and it is truly fascinating. Everything from their cars, equipment and techniques to get to the finish line first. What do you think?

The Cannonball book by Brock Yates is worth a read. Interesting tales. 32hours7minutes will probably be great if it ever gets a release but it's been in pre production for getting on for 4 years now so I'm not holding my breath.

Back in the day (2002) the Gumball guys did race NY to LA, it seems before it was all jackass' and rappers!

Lots of shared footage below but I think this year was the best for driving hard, you only have to see the F50 will all the paint chipped off the front spoiler (5.47) to get the idea.

There was a full balls out race from Oceanside in San Diego fron Annapolis in Maryland recently called the Race Across America (RAAM), in fact a couple of my friends took part!!

Very high average speeds were reached too, plus it was run continuously night and day. Sorted.

Sory, I forgot to add the 1st vid I posed shows the Ruf Turbo at an indicated 200mph on the public highway! Thats quite serious, I'm not sure why, even though it is all filmed from a Porshe, the vid is on the bmwm5.com site???

I slowed that down 5.5 times, to see if it looked fast or not. It doesn't. Even at 5.5 times, the timer is going too quick. I smell fakery, to be honest. I put the vid on YouTube.

This kind of thing is awesome. I was just reading the Mille Miglia feature in this month's EVO magazine, which I know was a legal race, but they got up to some pretty naughty speeds by the sounds of things, given it's on public roads. And then, after reading about their 3 day trip, I read that Stirling Moss covered the thousand miles in 10 hours!

They do have a race in Nevada where they shut down a 100 miles of road to race and I am sure that would be great to watch or drive in but there's already been some fatalities

No, the original Cannonball run- or, to give it its proper run, the Cannonball Baker sea-to-shining-sea memorial trophy dash, won by Brock Yates and Dan Gurney in a Daytona back in the early 70s was cool. Funnily enough I agree with this, the Americans had so much more freedom back then, fuel was cheap and the warmists were still hugging trees and envying Russia - so it was very much a race of the time.

Today with so many laws, so many lawyers and so much law enforcement, traffic and sheer people it's not going to be more than a stressful lesson in driving while looking over your shoulder and clutching your wallet.

The realistic alternative that real people could enjoy would be a timed rally with timestations, where you got penalised for arriving too early or too late. I think there is a reason that this type of rally is popular these days!

That's true America post 9/11 especially is a different country nor am I endorsing the wreckless speeding but it seems like the timed runs are a bit too cold and calculated it's more about math and logistics and I can see the amusement in that but for sheer viewing amazement and astonishment these races are fun to watch especially with the amount of video technology out now. I was watching and interview with one guy and he had planes involved!
