It's one of things that really isn't necessary, so they can't penalise you for it not working! Think of class IV vans (up to standard size transits, can't remember the weight limit): they can't see out the back, so just because you have glass at the back of your vehicle doesn't mean you have to be able to see out of it!

I think that's because front facing lights are treated as safety critical, so any front light fitted to a vehicle must work, regardless of how many there are or how redundant they are.TOPTON said:

The car in question is a Mondeo TDCI my son has just bought yesterday and going back to Surrey in it today
