I've never seen this on a UK spec car and its not referenced in UK owners manuals,so what is it?

On Board Computer on the far right of the dash and I presume the control switches are those mounted between the window switches. I've only ever seen (photo) of this fitted to a 560SEC.

I don't think the OBC came to the UK. I've seen it on French and German cars. It's quite a rare one, I think

The trip computer isn't listed in UK price lists, not even for the LHD-only 500E, presumably because it only works in kilometres. It appears in the brochures for the w126 SEC and the late r107 SL. There is a UK RHD S600 with it; there are pictures somewhere in this forum.
