Weekend mechanic

Having spent another day successfully fixing both my own and a friends car, we got thinking, what is involved in starting a business as a part time, home based mechanic?

There are the obvious tax based implications upon any earnings but what licensing/liability insurance/other paper work?

We both fancy some extra earnings and both working for an automotive engineering firm have plenty of knowledge and experience to tackle most jobs!

Home based i.e customers bring their cars to your house? Possible problems with neighbours and council; a chap I know fixed classic cars at home and had tremendous hassle from both - eventually rented a small unit.

if you have all the tools then would be worth doing at as a mobile and buying a small van, I would guess it's quite lucrative, I got quoted £300 by out local mobile guy to service the Mrs A140!. Parts are about £70.
So you'd have to be reasonable on the prices, but if you could half that (I wouldn't see a service as taking more than 2 2 1/2 hours)then you'd get the work if you advertise right. Get a proper website and put prices up. It's what I would be looking for and costs peanuts to do.
