My other car is a 1999 Daimler V8 (you can never have enough v8s!). I know this is not TVR query but I was hoping someone could help. The automatic has started to clunk when you pull away, and it seems the drive is slowly going. It is fine at higher speeds but there is sometimes an audible whining. My guess is that the clutches are going in the box, but I wondered if there are any other TVR/Jag owners out there who might have an idea as to what is going on.

The ZF autos on these are unfortunately made of cream cheese. 9 times out of 10 it's the clutch pack that tries to find its way out of its housing. I bought my XK8 with a fairly recent recon auto box fitted, hoping I wouldn't have to worry about it for a few years, but it is already showing early signs of clutch slippage. So far, the only company I've found that have a solution is:

Everyone else just seems to sell at best, boxes that have been reconditioned to standard spec, which means you'll be swapping the box out every few years.
I have read about people replacing the expensive transmission fluid, hoping to cure the problem, only to end up with no drive at all, as it was only the muck that was providing any grip.
Mine doesn't clunk, just slips like a manual with a slipping clutch, but I'd be pretty surprised if it wasn't the clutch pack housing.

Thanks very much for this. In the end I put the Daimler in to a Jaguar dealer for the auto to be repaired. I think your diagnosis is correct. My Dad was a transmissions engineer specialising in autos and he also agreed. Not much can be done other than spend the £2000 +. Intend to keep the car (it's my wife's car and she loves the old Daimlers/Jaguars). Otherwise they are such good cars, and look pretty good even though they are 10 + years old.
