tuned TT Mk1 or Fiat 20vt

Looking for low cost daily comfortable, quick stylish 2 or more seater - with sensible economy.
I understand either of these can be inexpensively and reliably tuned to c 270 bhp, with more expensive options to exceed 300.
Those that have driven them, which would you go for and why?
The multi-cylinder sound of the Coupe appeals, however the quad drive and build quality of TT pulls too.
Both are quirky but appealing designs, slightly effeminate perhaps, but the bang / buck / style quotient is pretty tempting at sub £4k - both can break 6 sec dash and have good overtaking urge i imagine at this level of tune. - I am also expecting high 20s or even low 30s on a 70 mph cruise and gentle local drives - being turbo, I imagine both in low twenties when hooning around the back roads.
Is it realistic to cheaply tune out most of the understeer on both, if so what are best methods?
Are there any inexpensive suspension revisions which enhance both comfort and handling over standard? - Which specialist within striking distance of Northampton / kettering are best for specialist mods on these cars at sensible rates?
Any PH members with modded variants of these near kettering willing to provide a sensible demo drive + share experinces of mods and weaknesses?
What alternative cars are there, sub £4k which provide a reliable smile in a daily driver. - Character and acceleration are more important to me than top speed or cornering G loads - economy must be sensible.
