Dash options - thoughts ??
Discussion
Just done mine in 1mm carbon fibre. Looks great. If I had my time again I would go for the 3M stick-on stuff; carbon fibre needs a jig-saw to cut even the 1mm!
I imagine that with 2mm CF you could lose the metal completely.
You could get the piano effect by priming and spraying the metal, then lacquering it?

There are a few options:-
1) Carbon effect - this isn't a starter, as I do not want any pattern - I want it to look like liquid - like 'oil' - smooth etc...
2) Painted and then lacquered - I would get the right effect, but the dash has to curve (right?) so I would need paint and lacquer that would be able to bend like this...
3) Get a reveneered dash, but in black wood (prob stained) and lacquered..
So, option 1 is a no go, option 2 is a poss and option 3 is also a poss, but expensive....
...has anyone gone with option 2 before (although not black, cos I have bever seen one) and if so, do you have any lessons you want to share?
Cheers

I like the sound of vinyl covering, assuming It isn't micro thin? Then it is just about colour. My dash top is dark blue, so black or dark blue might be to much. I can remember seeing a Tr4 with a white dash. Does your photo shop allow colour change please?
White???OK, you asked for it.......

I have a painted dash in the Griff - long story.
Its growing on me and I'm thinking about doing a much better job of it this winter.
Some things to watch out for.
The lack of veneer changes the depth of the dash - so have a good look at the area surrounding the dash panel edges to make sure there are no scuffs/wear that will show with the thinner dash.
Also, the dial brackets on the rear will now be out so make take some tweaking and regluing.
The surface of the backing steel wasn't a consideration when it was being built either - because it was being covered by veneer, so prime it with primer/filler to get a decent finish.
Try not to get it too shiny or it will blind you when the sun is low and behind you
And I apologise if any of thats teaching you to suck eggs
Most of all, its a marmite thing, so stick to your guns and give it a go, even if you have a go roughly first then go for a better finish if you decide it really works.
And good luck

I always liked the look of the body coloured painted dashes in the Pininfarina styled Fiat Coupe so imagine it could work well.
However, I also like the traditional warmth of wood in the Chim but, having got cracks and delamination appearing, don't really want to have to do the job more than once. Accordingly, and where the problems appears to come from the veneer on top having a different coefficient of expansion to the steel backing, I'm wondering about making the entire panel from a pre-laminated sheet of high quality maple ply or similar (ie with no steel backing). There's some lovely cabinet quality laminates available with varying degrees of figure in the grain that should be capable of taking a polished lacquer finish, adequately rigid, and also prove pretty durable in the hot/cold/dry/damp environment of a car.
Remember how tough your skateboard was, well same stuff if a bit thicker...

Nosh,
That looks good to me mate. What is the exterior colour of your car? How are you intending to create this effect? Paint on the metal substrate, vynil, or something else?
Have you considered Carbon Effect 3M Vynil for £20 like this? Dark Blue and Magnolia interior, Tahiti Blue exterior.
