Ive now had a bit of interest in my SLK with 2 people considering giving me their Chimaera plus a bit of cash. One of them i am very confident is a great car as I know the previous 2 owners have looked after it very well. The other one also sounds good but we cant agree on a value for the Chimaera, Its a 98 400 with outriggers done last year also has been polybushed all round, new suspension (Gaz)and has a stack of recipts over last 6 years showing regular servicing and maintenance. The downside is it was a cat D 7 years ago and has no stamped service book. Im estimating a value of around £7.5 while the owner recons £8.5
Would value some opinions on the second car

If you are going to sell a Cat car on then just remember they usually take a bit longer to move on. If on the other hand you are likely to keep it for a good while buy each car on current condition. If the cat d car is in better condition I would go for that one but I would want to pay approx 15% less for it than a non cat car as for sevice history its more important what has been spent on it recently more than what was done 10 years ago.
Its very hard to value most of these cars I think a lot comes down to how the individual buyer judges the condition and is willing to pay. You dont say how many miles but a 98 400 with no service history and cat D would not interest me at all unless was cheap. The cat D from 7 years ago wouldn't bother "me" to much but when I came to sell it on I know will put a lot of people of and Iam going to have to sell it on cheaper. The new outriggers is the only thing thats quite a plus point but lots of places do this for a resonable price now and if you or someone you know is handy with the mig welder you could do this really quite cheaply anyway. Good luck with the search!
How Many miles has the cat d covered? I have been looking in the classifieds for a while now and for 8.5k you could get a non cat d with new outriggers so I agree with your valuation of 7.5 k I certainly would not pay any more unless there is something you really like about this particular car!

It's done just over 60k only thing special about it really is fact that owner is willing to do deal with my current car so saving me on waiting on it to be sold. Prices do seem a bit all over the place at moment eg there is a 98 450 near me going for £7.5 and a another 98 450 in Scotland going for £12k Why not get him to pay for a Autolign inspection for a piece of mind.It will benefit him even if you don`t buy the car..

If you intend to keep your new chim for a few years, and improve it even more as you go then the first car without doubt. If your keeping for 12 months and dont intend to throw any more money at it, the cat D could be a possibility, but not at £8500. Your estimate is more realistic.
Any cat loss car has a limited value no matter what you do to it.
The better option is your first choice and the value of this car could even possibly rise if you spend and improve as you own it/use it.
Cat d are fine but not as a "keeper". IMO i hasten to add, good luck with your search, Tom.

The first car was also subject to an insurance claim but as said the current and previous owners are very capable TVR enthusiasts so I am very confident that it is in excellent condition - the current owner though quite rightly is finding the thought about moving away from TVR a bit difficult :-)
Ideally I would sell my own car and have the money in pocket to widen my choice but my car is a rare model (there is only 4 for sale across pistonheads and ebay)so quite a limited market. I have though had a bit of interest tonight with someone asking for more details and pics but gut feeling is that its going to turn out to be a scammer !!!!
Thanks for input all much appreciated

There is not much left to do to the first car trust me Cat d are fine but not as a "keeper". IMO i hasten to add, good luck with your search, Tom.

Thats why one of the last owners needed a new cat D project.

It has all the leaven goodies stalks , pedals ,oil filler cap ,alloy rad fan override. And a adjustable otter switch, ACT intake with K&N ,Wilwood 4 pots 300mm discs,Rebuilt rear calipers painted and good condition discs and EBC yellow stuff pads. 17" light weight OZ supper turismos with eagle f1's Gaz Shocks and back end fully polly bushed with Steve Heath rose joints , Sleeved Exhaust, ACT Silicon hoses and pipe work. And a good interior in good condition with alloy dash. And the chassis is original but solid and well treated and cared for, Never seen the winter when i owned it.
Why did i change this again i spent too much time and money on this over the 3 years i had it.

Oh well getting there with the Cerb i guess
