Sorry I feel the need to vent.

It has taken 23 weeks from having my offer accepted until the point of completion today.

We exchanged Wednesday afternoon and was advised that the solicitors bill would be in the post.

We receieved the bill sat morning but probably opened the post maybe in the afternoon because of the packing. The bill was as expected - no date to pay etc nothing untoward.

Fast foward to 10am this morning or in Bank open times 1 hour, the missus called the solicitors to ask for the current state of play. They will not complete until they have cleared funds for their bill.

I am at work, Missus is at work. Why the fk did they not advise on wednesday that we could not complete until their bill was paid?

So the old man has had to book a days leave to go to the Bank to draw the cash, because they dont take cheque, only cleared funds.

An utter shambles. I can see why they do it to ensure their bill is paid, quite rightly. But at least let me know that is the case beforehand.

So dad, you are a legend. And my solicitors, you are scheming s.

Lets hope the rest of the day rolls on smoothly.

You could have got a instant transfer done over the phone to your bank. I don't see why a day off work is required. It'd have cost £25, but saved a pot load of hassle.

I'm on your side, they're arses!

Oh and I had to book a half day last Thursday to get the solicitor their deposit because we were due to exchange last Friday. Halifax do not allow chaps over the phone because they need to see proof of ID. And then they didnt even bother exchanging for another 3 days.

Sorry I forgot to mention. You cannot chaps over the phone at Halifax otherwise I would have done so. You can only chaps in the Branch. So its quicker to draw the cash.

A bit stty.

Does it take a whole day to get to the bank then to the solicitors though? Can't you just pop out?

Also, are you not moving today? Thats the norm!

I am moving today. Unfortunatley the norm is all new to me. Its my first house, I am not sherking responsibilty, its just nobody told me it had to be paid this morning before I completed.

I just assumed it was asap?

Never mind, the old man has gone and paid cash now for me and has only had to take the morning off.

I don't understand why you're at work when you're moving today? Yes, you may complete at 4:59pm. But there are 100's of things to do on moving day! I always take the day off and get the van at 7:30am, We don't stop until midnight that night trying to get everything sorted!

Probably because the OP is in the fortunate position of being able to not have to rush around it it. It's his first house, so maybe moving out of parents home or rented accommodation that he is still paying for.

I've moved both ways and doing it all in a day is not the easiest way, just the enforced norm for many.

OP, not that it helps you but I didn't have to pay my solicitor prior to completion that last time I moved, but this time I do (just in the process of moving myself).

It's alot easier with no chain below you. As you can imagine, they want to get into their house ASAP, so you need to get out.

Next time, take my advise!

I find it amazing you weren't told this either beforehand, nor was it written on the invoice. I haven't dealt much with solicitors but when I have, their terms have always been generous. After all, who's not going to pay a solicitor's bill?!

Presumably the funds they require are more than just the bill - unless by an amazing coincidence they already have in their client account the exact completion monies?
