what car... £7/8k-ish Focusish sized estate

okay it looks as though my wife's megane has done what all french cars do and died..!
still it's done 45k miles in 2 years at we bought it for 6k so could be worse. hopefully the garage can revive it such that we can trade it in...
so assuming for now we had up to £7-8k budget what would you buy..?
gut feel is the 1.6tdci mk2 focus estate we should have bought 2 years ago anyway (
) or a c'eed wagon...but i also wonder about something a bit off piste like an Altea or Altea+
would like it to be <c40k miles

I would just go for a Focus Estate, its more or less the best in class. The 1.6 TDCI Zetec 110 is a nice all rounders. Quick enough, looks smart, well equipped, economical and spacious inside. Facelift version should be obtainable for that budget.
In VAG for that budget you'd be looking at high mileage PD diesels, or gutless N/A petrols. Both a little dated.
