Strange experience with car dealer

Just had a really odd experience. I went to the post office to get myself some tax for the new van, and on the way back I pass a small local dealership which tends to have a selection of "prestige" type cars in stock. Thought, aah, why don't I go and see if he's interested in buying my car (which is up for sale privately at the moment).

So in I go, find the prioprietor...

Me: "I've got a car up for sale at the moment, would you be interested in buying outright rather than taking part-ex?"
Him: "What you got"
Me: "BMW 3 series, 2005"
Him: "What version?"
Me: "330d MSport... quite high miles... 97,000"
Him: Shakes head... "No no, sorry mate, I tend to stick to 60-70,000 miles tops, so not interested I'm afraid"
Me: "Not to worry, was just a thought as I was passing, I'll be off then".
Him: Looks a bit uncomfortable as I head for the door.. half beckons to me with a "yeaah no" and then looks puzzled as I exit.

Got back to my car and suddenly it dawned on me why he acted so strangely when I left. He *was* interested. I guess it was just a "negotiating tactic".

Am I the muppet or is he? Maybe I'm missing the point of this kind of game....

If he was any good he'd have said, "I don't really need any stock at the moment, and I don't normally buy cars with that sort of mileage, but happy to have a look at it for you - what sort of money are you looking for?"

To be fair though, I do want to sell it (). I think he might be more hassle than it's worth though...

To be fair to him, 2 out of 24 cars are similar mileage to yours, but they do look like Part Ex's he is shifting compared to the others he has.

You should try webuyanycar.com, well off friend wanted to shift a V5 bora (55k) and a 5.0 cherokee ( 49k ) got £1200 each !!!!!!! I was furious with him, I would have had them for £1500 each, miserable sod........

Given that my car has a list of optional extras as long as my arm I don't think that's particularly competitive! If I put it up on autotrader for 8K I reckon it would sell almost instantly...

Some of those only just though, my statement still stands even with that with over 70% of his stock being under 70,000miles, it would be fair to say he only really buys cars 60-70k tops.

Two can play super anal, rounding up all the milages to the nearest 1000, they average out at 45,916.

Amazing how I can win and still be a loser at the same time........

Haha the dealer really gone and bksed on his negotiation skills there... I'd imagine Diesels are quite easy to shift ATM.

Hi there

I'm not too far from you, but am really keen to buy a 330d M-Sport - around 5/6/7 years old.

I don't mind if the mileage is high as long as the car is good, but I need a car pretty quick (wrote mine off and stuck with no car whilst the insurance company gets their arse into gear).

Do you have anything coming into stock any time soon or do you know of anything?

I've just started a new job and require a Diesel for my new commute. Out of strong recommendation from a friend I had a look on your website in the hopes of finding a car which fits my needs.

Unfortunately the car I like from your stock, the BMW 330D, has already been sold. Do you have any other ones in stock? I require the car ASAP as the commute is too far for me to handle in my current car.
