Hello all,
Just a quick question. I was wondering if it would be ok to lay turf on top of grass seed (that has already grassed)?
Here is the full storey... I recently moved into a new house and the garden was rotavated. It wasnt long before loads of weeds started sprouting up. So I decided to de-weed the garden, turn it over and grass seed the area to prevent more weeds coming through. Now I want to do it correctly. So my plan was to lay a couple ton of top soil on top of the seeded grass and level it off. Then turf on top of that. Im worried incase that turf doesnt root properly and starts dying off.
Any advice from green fingered PHers would be great.
cheers in advance Woody

Yes there is a chance that would happen. Why not just rotovate, add the topsoil and then turf it. Alternatively, you could weedkill the existing weeds and use the existing turf. There are some weedkillers that do not affect new grasses

That would be fine, make sure your spend time on the preparation ie spread the new soil and rake roughly level then tread the area with your feet, you will feel the softer patches, rake again removing any stones and rake soil into any hollows as you go, do this a couple of times if you can. A wide rake will make the leveling easier. The end result should be a level firm base to turf onto. Remember to keep the turf well watered until autumn.

You'll get weeds eventually even with turf. Is the current mixture of newly-seeded grass and weed unrecoverable by lawn weedkillers?

Turf can be a quick fix and as long as you keep on top of future weeds with a weed killer designed for lawns you will be fine!!

I can recommend the resolva lawn 24hr and resolva 24hr
Both do exactly what they say on the tin!! Superb stuff and I was shocked that it did actually work in 24hrs!!!

Suspect phenoxyacetics in good growing conditions - good perceived action smile

The other crowd-pleaser is ferrous sulphate as mosskiller; starts darkening moss in minutes.
