The Mother needs help...Honda Jazz

I need some help regarding for my mum. She is currently semi-retired and drives a 58 Honda Jazz.
She bought the car out-right for cash, and got 2 years free servicing. The car has now reached its 3rd year and it needs a service, and MOT which she will have to pay for.
She popped into Honda yesterday to get a new battery, Honda kept the car in overnight and then told her that she will need new pads and discs before the next MOT in September at a price of £267 pound.
I know I can get that the service, MOT and brakes/pads cheaper so thats not the problem.
Mum has now got it into her head that maybe it would be worth trading her car in and getting a brand new jazz in order to get the free servicing etc.
The question is...should she keep her current car or trade it in and get a new one?
Which makes the most financial sense?

Did they say - your discs are starting to wear would you like us to change them?
Reading the post again - it doesnt say it needs new discs and pads today but will do before MOT in September.
In September take it to a good MOT place, find another place to service it and tell her about the pads/disc scam

You don't mention whether the car is on finance or purchased outright, and the same for the replacement.
If it were me, spending £10k to save £200 a year on servicing is plain daft. However, I appreciate how having a car in warranty with everything paid for is an appealing proposition for someone who just treats a car as white goods.

I said to her about running it into the ground. She does minimal mileage, and will be less when she fully retires. Plus she has taken the hit on the depreciation.
I think the may have seen that she is a widowed lady, unsure about cars, and suggested that she needs new pads and discs. Probaly a load of tosh as she rarely hits 50mph so I doubt she is heavy braking everywhere.
I tell her to keep it, and get it serviced through a good indie.

It's a good time to change her jazz for a new one if thats what she's thinking of doing, They now come with 4 years free servicing and four years free aa cover as of last weekend, also 4 years 0% finance if thats an option to her. worth a look, even if you just price it to change and make the decision from there.

She could get a Kia with a seven year warranty or, as someone else said, a Vauxhall with a lifetime warranty but the economics of spending thousands on a new car rather than replacing a few wear and tear parts doesn't make sense. The guy at the garage I take my car to was telling the elderly owner of a Jazz that they're great cars and he's never encountered one with problems.
She worries that the car will break down and costs lots to repair etc.
Knowing Honda's they last forever and with her miminal mileage she might as well run it into the ground.

Mother came back from Honda earlier....total of £650 for a Service, MOT, Pads & Discs (apparently they had a slight lip on the disc)
She wandered up to our local indie we have known for years..straight away away said you wont need discs, but if for some reason tey need changing all in all £325.
And she is decided to keep the Jazz untill she no longer needs a car/or cannot afford to run it.
Makes you wonder why people go to the dealers to get things repaired out of warrenty....crazy money

Honda Jazz is a cracking little runaround last place i worked gave them out as courtesy cars they put up with unbelievable amounts of abuse without any problems at all.
Cars were run for 4 years up to @ 50k on some never fitted a set of discs on one just pads.
Also stand up well in an accident if what i saw of the crashed one is anything to go by!

Thats why I think she got it. Next door neighbour has had Honda Jazz, Accord, Civic new and old and now has a new jazz and CRV. Loves Hondas.Cars were run for 4 years up to @ 50k on some never fitted a set of discs on one just pads.

Grated its not the nicest car to drive, or look at but seems well put together and so practical as well. She loves it

A lot of manufacturers would only have covered the battery for a year.My missus is on her second Jazz - a lot of people around here have them as there are two well regarded dealers nearby. There are a fair number of younger owners here too - pretty MILF a few doors away has one.
In the Far East, Jazz (or Fit) is their Citroen Saxo - young lads drive them.We had the first one for 6years and never even changed a bulb. For the last couple of years, the dealer did tell us the brake pads would need changing "soon" but I never did get them done. Disks should only ever need changing every second set of pads and all Honda dealers have disk skimming machines so they could remove the lip if necessary.
Servicing them isn't cheap but I found I could batter the dealer down quite a bit. A big advantage if you don't have any other kind of cover is that they will renew the Honda roadside assistance - but they don't advertise this, you have to ask for it. That's a useful saving.
When ours was 3yrs old I asked about buying an extended warranty and the service manager said we didn't need it - and if anything happened he'd look after us. Not sure what that meant as never tested it, but they are noted for doing goodwill stuff
The early ones (our was 53 reg) do have a bit of a reputation for suddenly falling apart at 6-7 years old - a/c problems, gearbox bearing and body seams, hence we changed ours. In fact it had held together so well I hadn't realised it was 6 - I was telling the salesman it was 5yrs old.
I think the new ones are expensive, but it was a very easy purchase - wifey wasn't interested in looking at anything else and we did the whole change in about 2hrs, including test driving 2 different versions. The new ones don't feel as solid as the old ones though. And the ride (big weak point) is no better.
