The pay gap between workers in the private and public sectors has widened to its highest in a decade, according to government figures.

Civil servants, teachers and other public sector workers were paid an average of 7.8% more per hour than private sector staff in April last year. This was up from the 5.3% gap seen in 2007, before the recession struck, and the highest figure since the Office for National Statistics started compiling the data in 2002.

Oops, sorry, what I meant to say is that the rest of us work longer, for less, in order to pay for it. hehe

A lot of the less skilled public sector work has been contracted out in the last decade plus a bit.... E.g. Cleaning hospitals... That kind of thing.

In which case you should have put "at least the private sector get early retirement and better pensions to make up for it" smile

Wish I had the right to strike - we're not even allowed to moan!!!

No, I like it how it is, it highlights the fking absurdity of teachers striking over having to contribute more to their pensions.

Fair enough and I agree it's absurd.

I can hardly complain as I get a very decent pension which I don't contribute to - although this is currently under review as part of the Hutton report. I have also had a pay freeze for at least two years, am on call to be deployed anywhere at short notice for extended periods, facing redundancy for at least 4 years, have to fulfill other public sector jobs when they strike and not have the right to strike myself.

This is not a whine - I love my job and fully aware that I could leave at any time through choice.

I currently work public sector, the 2 lowest positions (AFAIK) are currently done via agencies.

Our receptionist is contracted in from an agency because the employer does not think a receptionist is essential and won't offer a perm contract.

The cleaners (couple of hours per day) are also contracted out to a large cleaning company.

Both of these jobs are technically public sector jobs as they solely exist to help the public body carry out its duties - but they will surely be counted as lower paid private sector jobs.

It is mentioned in another thread, and, as Moojoo mentions, there are doubts about the figures as many of the low paid jobs, carers, cleaners, bin-men, school dinner staff etc, are contracted out now.

The same thing affects the % with degrees - as it's the more skilled jobs that are left then the % is bound to go up. In a hospital, for example, it could be that every NHS worker would have a degree. Everybody else, cleaners, porters, admin, etc will work for a private contractor.

All bullsheet according to the Telegraph!!
Apparently the lazy feckers in "public services" (always laugh at that misnomer) are paid MORE than the private sector, do much less and still get their overinflated pensions (for which they do nothing!!)
