The Mighty Volvo needs your help.

I posted this in the Volvo section but I'm hoping it will get a bit more exposure here.


I find myself in a bit of a quandry. My hitherto ultra-reliable 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo has suffered a rather inconvenient setback. The car suddenly died on me recently. I had it towed to an independent garage and they're telling me it's the Ignition Control Module. The Volvo dealer charges $939.35 retail for one of these, but I can get it at the shop rate of $751.48. That's still a bit steep for a 21-year-old car with over 291,000 miles on the clock. I've checked with all the big Volvo breakers in the US but nobody seems to have one.

So I'm putting the word out. If anyone has one of these (or knows somebody who does), I WANT IT!!!

It is located under the left (driver's side) of the dash. Here are some photos of mine......

The Volvo part number is 3517369. The Bosch part number is 0 227 400 148.

I've also been told there are places that can rebuild my old one, but I haven't found any yet.

Could you not just go check the local scrap yards for old volvos. Chances are more than one old volvo used the same bit of kit. Take the part number with you and have a root around.

I tried that already. I even phoned some of the biggest Volvo breakers here in the States and turned up nothing.

Seems nobody wants to stock parts for a two-decade-old Volvo.

BTW, keep your old one, you can virtually guarantee that the failure is "old electrolytic capacitors" on that age of ecu. That would make it an easy fix for someone with basic electronics skills ;-)

Volvo ABS units (also Bosch) suffered hugely from dry joints, might be worth getting a local electronics repair agent to check it over for dry/broken joints first?

eBay is the best. We sell tons of stuff to people which will cost them $1,000+, they save 90%+ in most cases. Used parts are as good as new when it comes to most things, don't be silly and pay $700+ for a part like that.
