What are you hoping to achieve? Do you generally just want to go quicker? Are you hoping to get the car to run a specific time? Do you want to compete, or just run the car for fun? What's the current spec of the car?

Personally, I'd highly recommend joining SPRC or APIRA and coming out to race in Sportsman ET. I enjoy the competitive aspect of drag racing, so although I'd like to be going quicker, I'm more interested in winning. I'm currently running ETs that are significantly slower than my PB (over twice as long, in fact), but I'm having just as much fun doing so because ultimately racing is racing.

If your aim is just to try and get the car to go quicker then you need to decide (preferably sooner rather than later) where you want to end up. Do you want to have a pure race car, or do you still want something that's practical and legal on the road? There are almost unlimited changes you can make to the car, but if you're already making reasonable power, then tyres are probably a good place to start to try and bring your ETs down. Be careful about getting too much grip, though, unless you have a large budget for replacing broken parts...

im trying to run as quick as possible id like to eventual get something to keep up or outrun escort cosworth's and similar sorts of motors im mainly doing it for fun but im going to have a few grudge matches id love to be in a competitive class but the funds wouldn't stretch frown the cars going to be a full on racer
the current spec of the metro is ;1.8 engine conversion, striped interior,no front lights or bumper, ported head, throttle bodies, lowered and individualised hydro-gas suspension and an after market ecu (emerald)custom paddle clutch running on a 1.4 gearbox
my next jobs are tidying the wiring sorting my fuelling issues and getting some wider wheels

id have thought at that stage a cage would be added weight,
I doubt it will meet the criteria for a mandatory cage,

Sounds nice project, I like cars that are different and like you aim of beating bigger motors.

I'd fit a simple cage but nothing mega as like Graham says will add weight.

Put skinny wheels on the back, don't need all that tyre and rotational weight if FWD

Correct on both counts. But that's not necessarily a reason not to do it. Even though I don't need one for another second and a half or so, I decided to put it in anyway. Ultimately, a 13 second car is still going through the top end at 100mph+, and I didn't like the consequences of something going wrong at that speed without a cage. IIRC, mine cost me about a tenth and half, but that was worth it for my peace of mind.
