Help! Black Smoke from a Petrol Car?

I have a 2006 Mini Cooper 'S' - first of the 1.6 Turbo models which appear to be plagued with problems...
Mine's not been too bad except for the diesel impression that it's now doing.
When started up, I get black smoke coming from the exhaust. This clears quite quickly but the car does not idle cleanly at any point, and I'm sure has got sluggish and thirstier of late.
The worrying issue is that sometimes (and randomly) in 5th/6th at low revs (<2k) if I move to full throttle I'll get a hiccup in power momentarily, accompanied by a huge cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust - I know this as it obscures whatever's behind me.
The car has 28k miles on the clock, full service history and doesn't really use any more oil than 'acceptable'; which is 1l every c.1000 miles.
So before I take it anywhere and drop 'em, any suggestions on the problem? I know that these direct injection engines are notorious for poor valve sealing with the carbon build up but I didn't think that would manifest as a random and intermittent problem.

Black or dark grey smoke is usually overfueling, light grey to blueish white is oil.
I'd imagine you may have something like a boost leak somewhere that vents off your intake air, or maybe something up with the turbo actuator.
Oil smoke has quite a characteristic smell and is hard to miss.
