I have no experience whatsoever of paintwork repairs. I've done plenty of basic servicing jobs myself and have rubbed down repainted a Unimog chassis before but this is a bit different.

I've bought a 1999 LT35. Mechanically it's great but there are qute a few rust spots on the doors.

What's the best way to fix this? Not looking for a professional finish but just something that will look a bit more tidy. Can I use POR or something then rub down and respray (with a can?)

More seriously, you can get half decent (at best) results with halfords rattle cans, and it's a lot easier with a colour that's easy to match, like white.

Get rid of as much rust as you can, if you can't bead blast it then an random orbital sander. Get it back to as much bare metal as possible. Treat any remaining rust with any of those rust cure products. Pay attention to any seams or folds too, and look inside as well. Then a few layers of filler primer with sanding in between. Can't be too hasty as it has to harden. Then finish with some paint.

It won't look good, but it will look better.

Cheers,

FT.

Cheers FT. I've replaced the light cluster (which was previously held on by rope and obscuring the nunber plate), cleaned up the interior, done an engine service and the doors are next.
