One for the tax experts - Refund upon leaving the UK
Discussion
Please be gentle with me on this one chaps, I know very little about tax, other than it being the annoyingly large amount deducted from my salary each month
My wife and I are planning on emigrating early next year and having once worked with a chap who did a similar thing (but then came back) I believe there is something you can do to get a refund on some tax that's been paid?
I've had a look on the revenue's website but confused myself among terms like "split years" etc.
So, in basic terms, what tax can you get back? How much of what you've paid are you likely to get back? What is the best time of years to leave in order to get the biggest refund?
I presume it's just income tax (or a portion of) that can be claimed back?
We're both currently PAYE.

Basically, you fill in a P80 when you leave telling them you will no longer be resident for tax purposes from day X. At the end of the tax year, you file a tax return, enclose the P45 you got when you left, tell them about any interest, dividends etc you got and they work out your tax refund. You should also let your bank know that you are leaving, and they will stop charging you tax on any interest. It's a bit of a ballache, so make sure you keep all of your paperwork together, and if your transferring with work, make sure they offer you the services of a tax accountant.
