How do I put it back together :) loose bearing hub

So having had a highly successful time sorting out the front wheel on my road bike I set to the rear one. Then I found that the campag cassette needs a different tool to remove, so I got that, cassette off.. then smaller bearings dropped out of the hub. ass. I had assumed that it would be cartridge bearings for some reason.

Anyway, am I resigned to trying to find a 12mm hex driver to take the freehub off to put it all back together again or is there a trick to it?

I dont think I understand why there are 3 sets of bearings anyway - surely the one at the end of the freehub isnt taking any weight?

Then again I am as evidenced, a total novice.

Edit to add : There's a good instructional video on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4_6evdME7s but it doesn't seem to depict the extra 9 large bearings I have... puzzled. could they have fallen out of the freehub or something without my removing it?

Concluded that the 9 large bearings were spares I had bought for the front but not fitted.. hmm

Reassembly still proved a right pita. The largest chainring was slightly concave and as such merited a fractionally thinner spacer that I had not noticed in disassembly. Then it turns out that the amount of spacers and washers on the locknuts as depicted in youtube is actually different in application on the ribble winter frame, and the whole arrangement was slightly offset on refitting, so I still need to swap those back around!
