Best all round car for British weather?

After having a chat with a friend in the pub last night (we have both recently bought new cars). We got onto the topic of the best car for British weather.
He seems to think it is an S2000 (what he just bought).
I do not agree, I think something without a drop top and possibly 4 wheel drive would be better, I know we don't get THAT much snow but it does seem to be increasing as the years go on, and to be honest I don't think we get enough sun to warrant a drop top (this is meant to be your only everyday car, so we are not talking about weekend toys).
So what are you ideas chaps?

The snow wasn't that bad around here. I'd be more concerned with the state of the roads the rest of the year. Something with tyres that have a side wall thicker than a coat of paint and suspension designed to move over bumps instead of through them.
So... a Jaguar without the optional pimptastic wheels, maybe.

AWD isn't needed, for 99% of the population, decent winter tyres will be more than enough.
depends on the price bracket and how much fuel costs bother you but something like an M5/E63/RS6 estates have to be up there.
fast as you ever need and practical too, nice places to be and don't all shout "look at me!" too much.
