They are brilliant at what they do and I could never argue with anyone with petrol in their veins who choose one. They do have a bad image and as such, I'd Imagine any with bling spoilers and wheels would make you a target for boy racers, police and local villians alike.
Image is a funny thing. There's a lot of good cars out there that others consider too girly, chavy or not the right badge, etc. It's down to the individual if they want to "justify" their choice or choose a car that doesn't offend anyone!

In my experience, it is other people insulting the car and you for driving it. I was labelled a chav, and even called a c*** by my own boss during my Scoob ownership.
On the other hand, every Scooby driver I passed gave me a respectful nod or cheerful thumbs up, something I have never experienced in another car.
The image problem is wholly unjustified, and it is the ignorant idiots driving their boring diesel hatchbacks that you will find most objectionable.

My OH is teh ultimate car snob.
I always wanted one so got myself one in 2004. An 02 model with the Morretti light conversion PPP pack, anthrocite wheels etc. I increased the power (and noise) and played around with it a little on set up etc.
She used to moan like f
k, all her snotty mates would tut disaprovingly whenever it turned up.
But not one of them, to a single upper-middle class, Daily Mail reading bint uttered a single disparaging word when in the car.
They normally went.
Fuuuuuuucccckkkk, this is fast.
And the OH never minded squeezing the gas a bit to nip past other cars.
Brilliant cars with superb capabilities.
You won't regret it (unless you try commuting a fair distance - mine averaged 18mpg when it left!)

The 'problem' is that the price and performance of the older cars has attracted the sort of people who give driving enthusiasts a bad name.
I was looking at buying a P1 a few years ago but had to turn it down in the end as didn't sell my car in time and heard too many granding 4 pot stories for comfort. Love them dearly though

Ive had my bugeye wrx for 8 weeks now and i must say that i have never owned a car that has caused as many comments and attention as this one has.
Ive had positive and negative (lots of both) i do understand the chavvy image but i think it will change again soon as the insuerance costs for under 25's are obscene! Most of the chavs around here drive fiesta st's, focus's and astras.
I had always wanted a quick turbo jap car and i love it. Wont keep it forever but will keep using it until the smile is gone from my face when i drive it.

Cheap fast cars have image problems in one way or another, either by being late to the DSS in your Impreza, selling drugs from your M3, sitting in a cloud of steam in your Chimaera or shagging your sister in the back of your Trans-Am.
Very few sub £10k cars have a squeaky clean image or even a positive image if they have a bit of poke or a bit handy.

I've always regarded £10k as the line that draws in the rasclarts.
For whatever reason they (and by association, their owners) are generally seen as vulgar - whether that bothers you or not, only you can decide.
Personally, I can't see the problem but if you're concerned maybe you could go for one in a more sober colour scheme and avoid the whole gold wheel thing.
