But it was nearly 200 miles away, what would you do? Assuming you couldnt find one of this type anywhere nearer.
I assume most people will say, 'dont bid' but am curious as to how/what people would do. Would you get someone to recover it? Go and drive there and back yourself? Train? *shrug*

I actually recently did this myself, car was about 150 miles away but was an absolute steele
I got someone to collect it for me but I used the budget option which turned out to be the bloody expensive option once my driver got lost, came back home and took a hire car back to Manchester to collet for me.
I wouldn't be put off doing it again though. Just next time I'll be getting the train!!

I once mistook Northampton for being 'just north of Southampton' when I bought a Mk2 Golf GTi for £500.
Only after I bought the thing did I look up where Northampton actually was. Jumped on a train and went and got it anyway, about 15 minutes into the journey back, the exhaust fell off. After about 4 hours, arriving at my girlfriends in Bournemouth, I was practically deaf.
At one point I accidentally drove for several miles with my hand on the horn as I couldn't hear it over the drone!
It's good fun, think of it like a mini banger rally.
Only after I bought the thing did I look up where Northampton actually was. Jumped on a train and went and got it anyway, about 15 minutes into the journey back, the exhaust fell off. After about 4 hours, arriving at my girlfriends in Bournemouth, I was practically deaf.
At one point I accidentally drove for several miles with my hand on the horn as I couldn't hear it over the drone!

The two 'hamptons aren't like Korea you know!
As you now know it's quite a trip between the two. I was told playing with your horn would send you blind rather than deaf 
I've been to Crewe and Gloucester to get cars (from Southampton) after ebay purchases. It's a fun game but both were cars worth about 2k - for a banger you've got to price in the train ticket percentage more.

Just did it recently on a £400 E class, alleged to have 'engine issues' to make it even more fun.
Train from Yorkshire to Essex £40, £60 in juice for 4 hour return journey. Just made sure I had full AA cover to be safe and off I went.
The only issue on the return was the lack of radio making it very boring.

even if it isn't T&T book it into your local MOT centre and drive it there. I won a suzuki vitara on ebay for £350 (before people went mad about taking them off road and bumping up the price) and it was in portsmouth. 21 year old car but had full MOT and 2 days tax. Booked the day off work, got a lift down there with a friend and i drove it back. Sat in traffic on the m25, didnt over heat of anything.
Drove the 200 miles home, fitted a jack up kit. Went to my local 4x4 place, some big chunky tires the day after, then on the sunday did a fulls day green laning around the moors and cover around another 200 mile trip but it envolved about 10 hours of constant driving.
Was one of the best cars i have ever had for no maintance/cheapness/no complaints driving. (and i have spent 10k on hot hatches before).

I picked my £500 pajero up from canvey island and drove it the 300 odd miles home to leeds...or that was the plan until the pulley sheared off, snapped the belts, puntured the radiator and caused the turbo overheat and set fire to the engine bay...burning the hoses and the headlight wiring loom.
Just remember standing on the hard shoulder waiting for the fire engine thinking bugger.
Its in my garage at the minute as im putting the charred bits back together, turned out it looked worse than it was, just lucky it was a diesel really, my petrol one would have been toasted completely...oh what fun!!
