10 Year old Merc CL500 - What are they like?

Having a look round the classifieds and as I never really venture in the Merc sections, I stumbled across this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2922919.htm which seems like an awful lot of car for the money.

So what are they like, I imagine the fuel bills would be high, and getting them looked after could mean taking it to somewhere other than my local mechanic. How do they drive, are they a wallowy barge or reasonably sporty?

Watch out for electrical gremlins! Someone at work bought a S500 of the same vintage and had to have new dash pod at £1000! Central locking stopped working etc etc..

Crumbs thats alot of metal for the money...

...yet the hat on the back seat puts my mind at ease that this example has been well cared for

Yes it is 10 years old but it is a 10 year old flagship one of my friends fathers had one of these back in 2000 and it is very comfortable even for four large adults. It is a grand tourer and I can tell you that ever possible luxury gizmo comes standard. It is fast, safe,comfortable as well. I have always admired their coupes even the 560 SEC's. I think it a car that can easily go 200k miles or more. It looks like a really attractive deal. I think the only problem you'll have is people constantly asking you to borrow money because it looks a lot more expensive than the price suggest. New these were 90-over 100K

Funnily enough I saw the hat and thought exactly the same. I have a vision of a middle aged male owner who wears driving gloves...

I agree too, that hat sugguests a well off owner. Who cares for his car... may not be true, but thats what it makes me think

Hat, 'car can be viewed in Kensington' all adds up to making you 'think' it's a good 'un as the owner must be well off.

My Dad bought a CL500 from new in 2004 for £75K. Amazing car, never had a single fault and went like stink. Handled extremely well for such a big car and was extremely comfortable on any stretch of distance. Suprising amount of room in the back as well. Fuel was a tad expensive though but it was getting 28mpg on the motorway and around 19-22 through town. Having 7 gears you could drive at 90-100mph and only be doing 1500-2000rpm.
