Afternoon all. Just bought a nice 2003 Disco TD5 ES in grey with black leather and so forth. It's had springs on the rear and seems in excellent nick overall.
So what's the list of recommended goodies? I'd quite like to chip it (for economy purposes as much as anything else) - any recommendations?
It also needs a pair of rear tyres - what are people using?
TIA!

Well I picked it up yesterday, really pleased so far. I've given the interior a good clean out and fitted some nice new carpet mats (also have rubber mats for winter). Also fitted cruise control and replaced the horn buttons.
Next step tuning - looking for some more economy ideally. I'm going to speak to Allisport to start with as they are only a few miles away.

Interestingly he replied within a few minutes of emailing him with this:
We have various options that we manufacture (and in fact we manufacture for both many other tuning companies).
There are various stages you can go to, so I have outlined them below.
We offer a tuning package comprising of an uprated intercooler, which is considerably larger than standard and an electronic tuning system designed to compensate for the improved mixture created by the intercooler.
Our uprated replacement intercooler is designed to use the standard mounting points and original pipework, so there are no extra brackets or hoses. We use a very high spec vacuum brazed aluminium core, designed and built by ourselves, which is far more efficient than the standard design. Our uprated replacement intercooler is over three times larger than standard and will fit without any modifications to the vehicle or air con system if fitted. This option is suitable for all models including cars with automatic transmission.
We also offer a much larger unit which is only suitable for cars with manual transmission. This cooler is even larger than kits we produce for Defender TD5 and gives incredible cooling efficiency. We manufacture all our intercoolers using a very coarse fin design, meaning minimal change to the air flow reaching the water radiator. We mostly sell kits export, and to very hot climates and as long as the cooling system is up to scratch we do not encounter problems with water temps rising.
With regard to electronic tuning, we can re-map your original ECU or we offer our plug-in tuning system. We produce maps for standard or uprated intercooler systems, and we also offer a bespoke tune specifically for each vehicle, which can be tailored to your needs.
Bear in mind that if you have a remap initially, and then install an uprated intercooler, the “mapping” will need optimising to allow full benefit of the cooler, denser oxygen rich air.
Our electronic tuning module system acts in a similar way to a "chip" but is plugged into the loom externally. We have available a true "plug in" system, which for warranty purposes can be totally removed leaving no signs of modification. The power delivery is very smooth and the system is very easy to install.
If you already have had some tuning done to the car, this will need adjusting to get the best from the new intercooler. The uprated replacement intercooler is £390+vat which fits all models, or £440 + vat for the larger option which is only suitable for vehicles with manual gearboxes.
The benefits of the tuning package are a 25% increase in power and torque with the ECU reprogramming or tuning unit fitted alone and a full 40 - 45%, or 195bhp + when matched to the intercooler. These increases tend to be in the lower and mid-range revs with improved acceleration, throttle response and an improvement in economy. The price of our ECU reprogramming is £395vat and the full kit is £720+vat. The new plug in system will cost a little more at £480+vat or £855 including intercooler. Please note that there is little or no improvement in economy with remap/tuning only. Economy gains are only expected when combined with the intercooler.
For maximum benefit, it is possible to increase the boost pressure. This cannot be done with the car in standard form as the ECU will sense higher boost and go into limp home mode. This can be overcome with one of our Boost Boxes for £125+vat, allowing higher boost to be used which will in turn make the intercooler more efficient. This is only recommended when an uprated intercooler is installed.
We also manufacture highly efficient uprated replacement aluminium water radiators. This item costs £440+vat for the Discovery.
We are offering a free fitting service currently, or the kits are available for DIY fitting.
Our new silicone turbo hose kits are also available. They are finished in blue and are far more substantial than the Land Rover items. The price is £88+vat ordered on their own or £60+ vat as part of a larger order. We also recommend the use of high flow ITG air filters. These flow more efficiently and are washable to save future replacement. We can fit a direct replacement element for £55+vat. For maximum benefit and engine efficiency we offer CAT replacement down pipes and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) removal kits for £90 and £45 + vat respectively. All our products are designed to let the engine “breath” more efficiently and will improve driveability and fuel efficiency. There are no MOT implications with our kits.
If you would like any more information about any of our products, please do not hesitate to give us a call or email.
I hope this is of interest and look forward to hearing from you.

Instant C&P job then. It's very tempting, especially with free fitting.
Incidentally I went with General AT2s as the new Grabber ATs were likely to take a week to come in. So far on road seems fine, they're not bad noise-wise but it is noticeable. Wet and dry grip are better than the Nexen that were on the front before and the slight shimmy it had over rough road surfaces is improved. I'll see how pleased I am after driving to Ireland in a few weeks

Out of pure curiousity, I'd lift out the engine ECU (behind the battery) and remove the two multipin plugs. They should be clean but it's not unknown to find one or both of them full of oil. If they are, clean them out with contact cleaner or similar and get yourself a new injector loom. Less than £50 and an easy DIY change. Regular TD5 issue as I found out a bit late!
We have an allisport intecooler on our Defender TD5. Seems to be a well made bit of kit.
Would echo the bit about the oil getting into the loom. Alive tuning recommend its changed as a service item.
We have an Alive Tuning remap and turbo booster box, plus an EGR removal kit.
I only drove one stnadard defender, but ours is worlds apart in comparison.
Look up Bell Auto Services as well, they do a variable vane turbo for the TD5.
