as from my thread the other day, im after a diesal saloon under 10K.

now i seem to have accidentally stumbled apon the alfa 159.

What a fecking bargain 8K for a 3 year old (25K new) car.

and just look at it! and look again at the stunning interior.

Im getting "physically" excited just looking at the pictures.

I also know if i go and look at one/test drive, i will buy it.


If i buy one will it ruin me? leaving me stranded at the roadside?

Are alfa's so bad these days?

do i go for it? or avoid?

I'd buy it even if I had to look at it on my drive...
Has to be the best looking sallon out there by a country mile.
Fiats seem to have improved their image of late and I don't recall seeing anything bad about them.

Edit: I meant saloon, the salon must have been a slip....(not a silk slip obviously...)

I was you 1 year ago and became the proud owner of a 3yr old 2.4 in black. Best looking car of its type by a long way! Now I'm in BMW-land, it's safe here

I had a 159 2.0 diesel for about 18 months and 40,000 miles. It was a company car, and the following was done:

4 new tyres, and the fronts needed replacing again when I gave it back (20k from the fronts, about 30k from the rears)
3 windscreens. not really the fault of the car!
1 service. No idea on cost, but just an oil change.

It averaged around 40mpg. I had two faults - windows randomly lowered themselves overnight for the first 3 or 4 days I had it, and it had an intermittent fault code from the lamda sensor, due to be replaced at the next service.

Great cars. Comfy, reliable, not as good on fuel as they should be. My experience was very positive.

One of the lads I work with has one. This guy never liked cars, always had Mitsu Charisma's and clapped out jap boxes. He test drove on a whim and never looked back. He's had the brake calipers painted, a little snake badge bought and stuck on the back, and the side mirrors changed to chrome. I've never once not seen in it waxed and washed tp perfection inside and out.

The car turns you into a petrol head!

This is me, albeit with a 156. Rode everywhere on a mountain bike (expensive) until 26 and only learnt to drive because I wanted one. Can't stand to see it dirty and it's cost me a fortune in non-essential work. Don't even need a car at all.

Maybe if you like Audis. Not in the same league/hemisphere as the Alfa in the looks department.

true- but it is a whole lot cheaper than an equivalent Alfa!

Also, 40 mpg from a 1.9 diesel 159 is truly terrible! My brothers petrol volvo gets 38mpg, my old mans 2004 2 litre diesel Vectra gets 54mpg and my mothers 1.6 diesel C4 is averaging 66mpg at the moment.

alfa's certainly look good, but i wouldn't buy one for an everyday long distance derv.

I agree to a degree. This is a head/heart decision. Our Mondeo 2.0 petrol will turn in an average of 32 and I'd rather have petrol than diesel on that difference.

Totally different segment of car though, hence it's cheaper for a reason. I happen to think the front end is very ugly - way too agressive for a shopping car (the Evo just gets away with it).

ye im not a fan of the lancer, too many people will confuse it with an evo! the 159 deffinatly has the looks, and the interior is

my head is deffinatly winning, i can't wait.

just a shame i have to wait for tesco to process the loan, so i won't be able to take it straight away
