I'm thinking of putting my name on the waiting list for the 997 (as soon as I receive an offer for the new job I've applied for ). I see on the topgear website they say that the 997 goes on sale in September. But what does that mean? Will they be being delivered to people who have ordered at this time or is this the time when they will start building to spec? Plus if I put my name on the waiting list in the next couple of weeks, how long do you thing it would take for me to get delivery? Any steer appreciated.

By the way, I think the shape of the 997 is gorgeous!! I used to think the front looked like a beetle, but now everytime I look at it it just gets better and better! I once thought the designers had made a big boo boo but now when I look at it, I think they are inspirational. Am I becoming biased because I am about to put my name on the waiting list or are other people's views changing too? I think the new shape is going to great, and the front of the 996 is going to look out of date like no-one's business (sorry 996 owners!)

Finally, I'm a newbie to this site (and this is my first post) So if this topic has been flogged to death, I apologise! Also, I don't mean to offend anyone!

I think I read a couple of months ago that the waiting list was already more than 12 months. However, if it's anything like other marques, Porsche will give different allocations to different dealers so it's worth phoning a few to ask when they would expect to be able to deliver a car. I've been somewhat tempted to put a deposit on a DB9, but the waiting list is three years already and I'm just not that patient!

OMG, if it's over a year I will completely die. I just wouldn't be able to wait that long. Thinking about it, I like the boxster too, so I could buy a 2003 S while I wait. I know I will lose money, but you only live once, right?

I will give some dealers a call next week and I will let people know how I get on.
