Okay - good timing as I am in Rovinj currently over on the west coast of Croatia ... get on up here and enjoy beautiful the surroundings of this town. Very relaxed and chilled out place.

Not sure how far a drive it is though, as Split is down at the southern tip ...

Good thing is, there are hardly any Brits here, so no football shirts on show or bare torsos and ugly tattoos and that's just the women) ...

Myself and a mate hired a car from Split a couple of years ago. We headed down the coast to Dubrovnik, great drive and plenty of beautiful places to stop. Dubrovnik itself is a great city, beautiful and not unlike the photos above in fact.

I'd also recommend a side trip to Mostar in Bosnia. Something we never managed unfortunately, but not too far from the Croatian coast and a very interesting place.

We also took the ferry to Hvar and stayed in Hvar town. Again a great place with a distinct lack of chavs/trouble and a really relaxed atmosphere. There are definitely other islands in that area to check out as well and all quite easy to get to by ferry from Split or Dubrovnik.

Mostar in Bosnia is well worth a trip to, I drove from Split last year on driving tour to Romania (Top Gear best driving road in the world was a real let down), Mostar was one of the best places we visited and we are thinking about going back on this years driving tour down to Montenegro.

I can dig out an address for a really good hotel there if you want but it would be an easy day trip from Split.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't think I'm allowed over the border into Bosnia with a hire car.

If you are driving along the coast, you don't have much choice. There is a section where Croatia is split by Bosnia for a short distance and doesn't have a coastline. We drove into Bosnia in the hire car and it was fine smile

If you do decide to drive to Rovinj, take in Opatja on the way.

When I went a few years back we stopped off here for the day: http://www.visit-croatia.co.uk/plitvicelakes/

Well worth a visit if you're into that kind of thing.. Amazing views/scenery and a great place to have a wander round. We were there at the end of August and although it was busy at the entrance it's such a big place that the crowds got soaked up pretty quickly.

Dubrovnik is awesome, the only place I've bothered going to more than once.

Mostar is an interesting day out, as is Kotor in Montenegro.
