How do I get the registration plate from an old motorbike?

My friend has an old Suzuki motorbike with no tax or MOT. The registration plate would be perfect for my car, but do I need to get the bike taxed and MOTd before I can try to transfer it? If I don't have a plate to transfer to the Suzuki do I need then to scrap it?

I've had a look on the DVLA website but, as ever, it doesn't really answer the question.

No, once it's taxed and MOT'd, you put the plate on retention or transfer and the LVLO will issue the bike a new age-related plate.
