2003 Discovery V8i ES auto. what goes wrong? good car?
Discussion
Hi guys. Looking at one of these as an very occasional tow car and for snowy winter days in country.
Its gonna get hardly used and stay sitting for long periods... is this a problem? my 911 goes flat after a week. drives me nuts.
Are they reliable?
what goes wrong?
Are they silly thirsty?
Should I be looking at something different?
is there a good way of transporting mountain bikes with them?
Thanks in advance for all your help. I really know hardly anything about these cars!!!!
sorry for any dubass questions.
Car in question has 80k on clock by the way.

I've got a 2002 TD5 Disco, which has given me a lot of problems since I stopped using it as my main car. WHen I bought the new one, I got such a derisory (?) low offer from the garage in part-exchange that I decided to keep it. I've got an agricultural contracting business, so I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a spare 4x4 knocking about.
It's had loads of problems - brakes/ABS system (google 3 amigos) - air suspension - electrical/alarm problems. It has always been serviced as it should, and I'm a bit disappointed to have had so many problems. The garage say that it's because it just doesn't get used enough.
That's the main reason for my post - the fact that you're proposing buying it for occasional use. I know mine's a TD5, but the engine itself hasn't been a problem.

All Landy's like TLC and can suffer lots of niggles. That said they are usually reliable and won't actually let you down or stop working. Its gonna get hardly used and stay sitting for long periods... is this a problem? my 911 goes flat after a week. drives me nuts.

The D2 does have a lot of electrical bits compared to older models though.
Air suspension is often an issue, although it's rarely as complex or expensive as some garages make out.
The RV8 is fairly stout, although I think some latter ones can suffer liner issues.
MPG will be poor. 14-16mpg range is what I'd budget for.
sounds like I maybe looking at the wrong car....
Thanks for yoru advice guys.
Would a Jeep Grand Cherokee be the better bet?
Dont really like the looks or interior to be honest! but if its the tool for the job...
MPG not a worry. Pobably will do less than 1000miles a year.
The other thing I was looking at was a £5-6k Audi Allround

Less than 1000 miles a year. One has to ask, but is it actually worth having a car for? Let alone spending £5-6k on one.

Jeep's are nice. But any car sitting around this much is likely to suffer the same results. That said I don't personally think Landy's are bad.
Not sure on use, but if it's a 4x4 maybe something like a £1000-1500 Series III diesel would be a better bet. It'll be fine standing and not much on them to go wrong.

Of course it is... and I wouldnt wanna drive to Nurburgring in an old Landrover though! and this vehicle may have to. Jeep's are nice. But any car sitting around this much is likely to suffer the same results. That said I don't personally think Landy's are bad.

Its to tow my trackcars to events that I dont wanna drive to... For example My Westfield has no roof or screen and so gets transported to trackdays in a race shuttle as the slightest bit of rain is just a freaking nightmare for the car and driver... it has 800bhp/ton incidently
so I need something to tow it a few times a year.less than 1000miles a year is bit silly I suppose in a car! hence why I just sold my E46 M3 that I did less than 500 in! and my 996 Turbo is gonna be for sale soon.... I've not even sat in that for 6 months!
Thanks for the all the advice. Looks like a Jeep Grand Cherokee is the way forward until my Girlfriend moves back from Aus next year and I will no doubt be having to buy her a RR sport or something and that can be the tow car as well
