Hot Tuscan MK1, please help!!

Coming back after a day out and the water temp started to rise up to 99-102 as I hit some traffic, thankfully it only lasted a short while and a quick blast later she cooled back down.

Problem is that neither of the radiator fans came on and after leaving her to run on the dive the temp started to rise again and still no fans!! frown

I have checked the fuses and all seems fine - what should I be checking next?

Hi'
First port of call for me would be the 2-pin connectors coming off the fan motors themselves. It is a main bonnet lift to check these. They have a tendency to get corroded on the connector blades. Usually a spray with contact cleaner does the job.

If this doesn't work then I'd be looking at the fuses (30 amp fuses 3 & 15) and relays (relay 51 & 23 IIRC) located drivers side under dash - just above your right knee.

I'm assuming you've checked coolant level?

You could also try to remove the connection to the ECU water temp sensor, this will fire the fires automatically as a fail safe. Makes fault finding easier, most likely the fan connectors as above.

Neil,
Not quite sure what you mean? I guess if your saying to remove the connector from the sensor on the engine/block...the FANS will come on (as a failsafe)?
Not being a pedant - just want to understand :-)?

Yes, pulling the ECU temp sensor connector under the airbox will cause the ECU to go into a failsafe mode and tell both fans to come on.

If you pull the connector and the fans come on, this indicates that the fan control circuitry is working normally and the problem is likely the ECU sensor. The pod uses a separate sensor to the ECU for redundancy.

If fans don't come on, then check fuses, relays, connectors etc, starting with the electrical connectors on the fans. They corrode, get hot, melt and eventually stop working completely. Check the coolant level as well.

Aaah - that's how I understood Neil's post.

Thanks for the explanation, Dave, makes sense.

Thanks Guy's,
My Fans had stopped working, quick squirt with WD40 on the 2 pins and it worked a treat, there was no slack at all on the clip for fan 2, getting it off was ok, but a bh to get back on as I couldn't get my fingers behind to get some purchase on it.
However all is working well now.

Kind regards,

James
