Is that a sales technique to get those that are wavering to order now rather than later .
Also makes the company balance sheet look a bit more healthy, should anyone want to look at it, for no particular reason.....................

The last time we went to the MotorShow, MG Rover were treting it as a glorified Car Boot Sale, so TVR are kittens compared to thar!!! lol

They did the same when the T350 was launched, 1K cheaper if you ordered whilst the motorshow was on.
I put a deposit down for a targa, sight unseen obviously as they hadn't designed it yet.
When they finally made one I didn't like the look of it, so no car ordered & TVR still have the cash.
Think about this if you're about to place an order for the convertible (seen it with the hood up yet?).

What happens to the cash, can you transfer the deposit to any TVR at any time ?

Or is it lost ?

I think they are transferable but I only know one person who's successfully got it back when they didn't go through with their order.

Get this one - I put a deposit down on a Tuscan well before the design was finalised, and did so on the basis of my dealer stating that the deposit was refundable if I decided I didn't like the final car. Well I didn't, and TVR would not refund my deposit, stating that the dealer was wrong to have said that in the first place, and that all deposits are non-refundable.

This went all the way to Wheeler himself and he just said flat NO (completely ignoring the fact that I had owned 3 TVRs before). Customer service - I don't think so!

Gixxer,

I can't think of anything more deflating than that, especially when we spend so much money for this product, coupled with helping support genuine British innovation and manufacturing,,,,,, to be treated like that from the top guy does make you sometimes wonder if loyalty is deserved!

Have TVR still got your deposit?
Obviously I haven't seen the small print in your contract, but it seems pretty likely that a trip through the small claims court would get your money back in those circumstances, either through the dealer or TVR themselves.

Your contract was with the dealer, not TVR. If you have the agreement in writing, it's Court time.

even if it wasn't in writing if you have a credible witness it's court time....

TVR still have my deposit which they are "happy to place against another TVR in the future"! The problem is complicated by the fact that the dealer in question no longer has the franchise (they gave it up before I decided not to go for the Tuscan). Also, I have nothing in writing regarding the agreement to have the deposit refunded if I chose not to take the car, and at the time I had already bought two Chims from said dealer and had no reason to doubt his word (more fool me).

What further complicates this case was that the original order in question was not in fact placed by me but by another customer, who had decided he wanted out of the order. I agreed to take the order over and paid the deposit, but apparently the dealer wasn't supposed to allow that either.

Anyway, that's all neither here nor there, the plain fact is that I have been a loyal TVR owner for over 8 years and 3 cars and the man himself (Wheeler) couldn't give a toss and chose to keep my money just because he could!

The way that deposits work is that you have the contract with the dealer (who could offer more preferential terms IF they choose so, but on the basis that they manage the risk). The dealer then places the order on TVR - your contract is NOT with TVR directly, as that is what the dealer is there for.

So, if the dealer is getting stroppy about things then I am afraid that the complaint is with the dealer and not TVR themselves. Take it up with the dealer and argue to get your money back - if they cant do anything with TVR, thats not your problem.

Sounds very much like the dealer is just acting as a middleman and trying to get as much as they can. They could quite reasonably transfer the deposit or refund it - but cant be bothered with the hassle, risk or pain..... but like I said, its between you and the dealer - if they have agreed to something then get some good solicitors on the case..... sorry.

That's all well and good, and I do understand how it works now, but at the time I naively assumed that the dealer and TVR were one in the same (why on earth would I think otherwise). Once I realised the situation I specifically asked TVR to recognise the fact that I was a loyal customer who had been misled by one of their representative dealers, and asked them to refund my deposit and then take it up with the ex-dealer themselves. They told me to sod off.

A good lesson in why you should always get everything in writing - especially where cars, buliders, investments or accommodation are concerned (or anything really that involves large amounts of your hard earned cash).

Although IMO buying a car or house 'off plan' is never a good idea. I dont think I'd ever pay large sums of money up front for something that hasnt yet been built (unless I'm rich and speculating for profit). If they go bust, the consumer rarely gets anything back.

I was very VERY close to putting a deposit on the new Tuscan convertible on Sunday, but decided that I really wanted to see more of it, i.e. with hood up, bonnet open, different colours.

The H.L.Gorner's guy... I won't mention his name as I don't want to inadvertantly drop him in it... also stated categorically that if there was something about the final design that I really didn't like, then I would get a refund.

Considering the time lengths involved I opted to risk paying £2k extra and having the chance to see the final fully working car. If I don't like it, there would be no point me switching deposit to another model, as I'd probably just go and get a two year old Tuscan S and save all the new car depreciation.

i even had a chat to Mr Wheeler himself... he said he liked my hat! he followed me in from the motorway
