320d Efficient Dynamics - experiences?

Hi, colleague at work is considering coming over from the wrong side that is Audi, and is wondering what people are experiencing with the mpg of the 320d ED. BMW claim 68.9 on combined which is fabulous - anyone getting close to that?
If you're easy on the throttle and change up at 1500rpm like the gearchange indicator seems to want you to (even though it feels like the engine is struggling), then I'm sure you could get something like that on a good run sitting at 70mph.However, on my 60 mile each way run (mainly motorways) sitting at slightly above that for 40 miles each way of that run, I only managed 45mpg - although I was using a few more than 1500rpm to accelerate along slip roads and to pull away from traffic lights - otherwise I'd have been in 30mph in 6th.
As an example I got 70.6 mpg this morning. 20 mile journey, 15 on motorway and 5 miles a mix of b roads and town centre. To be fair the traffic was a little quieter than normal. I really don't have to try hard at all to get 60 mpg though. If I stick the cruise on at a genuine 70 mph, and leave it there, I consistently achieve very high 60's low 70's. It only revs at 1,750 at this speed, so you can see where it gets it economy from. I've never got it below 50 mpg on any journey over 5 miles. I got 68.9 on my very first trip (180 miles) after collecting it!
PS
It wont do 30 mph in 6th at 1500 (not sure if I misunderstood the previous post), you'd be doing 60 mph at those revs. 4th at a genuine 30 mph is more like it, about 1,100 revs from memory.

You understood perfectly, but I was exaggerating about how quickly it told me to get into 6th when I'd only just got into 4th/5th.Not quite the same car but my 318d Msport showed 47.8mpg over 7k miles. Measuring brim to brim suggests this is accurate too. At lorry speed just under 60 on a flat motorway it will do over 70mpg, at 65ish it will do 60+ish mpg, at 70-75 circa 52ish mpg and 80ish 47ish mpg. Around town and using gears 1-3 I think you will struggle to get much over 40mpg.

I have to concur with edc. My 2010 318d (BMW quote Combined 62.8) shows a real world figure of 44.8MPG on the trip computer over the last 3K miles. I guess I do a little more town driving than edc, hence the lower figure.I have a 2010 E92 2.0 Msport diesel with stop start. Not full on ED but close.
On my daily 80 mile commute the OBC shows an average of around 54mpg. This is a mix of fast A roads and slower town based driving. My average speed for the commute is 40mph.
My previous 2006 E91 2.0 diesel only managed around 44mpg on the same route.
I'm very impressed with the current crop of BMW diesel engines.

I tried last night on the way home from work how little (without losing my licence) mpg I could get though...I still got 51mpg. Must try harder next time.
