What the hell is in my petrol?

The wifes Jag XJ Sport. 3.2 had a small amount of water get in the tank. Had advice to tip some Methylated Spirits in which is miscible with water, but still will not start. Turns over, but no firing.

Decided to investigate and took off the fuel pipe and turned it over and collected what came out. Thats picture 1 below.

Picture 2 is fresh petrol from a can......what the hell is in the bottom of glass 1? Seems sticky as well, but that might just be the plastic glass melting!!

Its not the Methylated Spirit as I only used about 250 ml, plus when mixed with petrol is does not look like photo 1.

The petrol is sitting on the top of the goopy stuff.

Either way, easiest thing to do is pump the tank dry and then put some good fuel in there.

Change the fuel filter too, to be on the safe side

At a well known supermarket up in the north east we have had an incident where the petrol had become mixed with water, goodness knows how. It has led to quite a few breakdowns and affected more than one petrol station (but only for that supermarket).

Weirdly enough it wasn't mentioned on the news at all.

The feul tanks are prone to rust. My guess the inside of the tank has started to rot
