Clutch pedal doesn't return... cause?

Golf 1.8, pulled in to let someone pass in a tight road, dipped clutch, about a second later, THUD and stalled. Now I can't engage gears. I can pull the pedal up with fingers. If I press with foot, there's no resistance.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong and how much to fix?

how old a golf? could just be a cable - a few quid to fix

Is the clutch cable or hydraulic?

Sounds like a broken cable to me.

Check the manual/web with car VIN that will define the type of clutch. The cable is easy to replace in comparison to internal fault with clutch. Good Luck

Who needs a clutch?

Just stick it in 1st and turn the key to get moving. Rev match your gearchanges and it should just slot straight in.

if its a cable the AA will most likely be able to make a repair at the roadside - they usually carry a reel of cable for this purpose, clutch and accelerator cable snaps all the time

Yeah, I tried that already. I broke down very close to home so thought I could shunt it all the way, buggering the gearbox up instead.

If its a MK4 it'll probably be the square metal piece that holds the master cylinder rod broken off. About £27 for a new pedal and clip.

Most probably clutch release bearing. Had the same with my Last Supra had to drive it 7 miles without a clutch was good fun once I got the hang of it.

Well, looks like the clutch cable fitting kit (that links the cable to the clutch arm) has gone. Hrm.

Could be as cable or the clutch fork itself.

The cable was intact - the parts that hold the cable to the clutch arm had disintegrated.

Yeah, the parts don't seem expensive - it's the getting the car to someone that might be the problem. I will see if my trusted garage (tvrfix.com) can do it without me having to pay a massive towing fee to someone (I think the AA might be able to tow it) otherwise I'll have to look at a local mobile mechanic.

I thought you meant it was the pedal box at first, they can be a right pain to fit!
