996 Turbo Questions

Am considering a 996 Turbo and just have a couple of questions.
1) Have there been any changes in spec for the 996 Turbo since its introduction?
2) Can the X50 performance upgrade be applied on a used 996 Turbo?
3) Any views as to when the 997 Turbo will be available?

1/ don't know
2/ not without bizzare expense (changes to gearbox, turbos/intercoolers/ECU etc)
3/ 996 turbo is said to run in parallel with C2, C4 etc for (I quote) "a while". I guess that means if you put an order in now, you might see one in 2006 (might). If you wait till it's out then I guess 2007
I think this is why the 996 Turbo S is being introduced (which is, as I understand it, an X50 with fancy wheels, a badge and ceramic brakes)

Sorry but a little off your topic but personally I would not buy new one, forthcoming 997 influence, basically the 996TT is nearly a 5 year old car etc all add up to buying new providing little advantage.
Recommend you get an official Porsche centre 2 or 3 year old 996. I.E and late 2001 model with glove box, BOSE etc. (You still get used car warrantee that is excellent) Save yourself a few at least £20K and spend £2,500 for an ECU re-programme with any of a host of UK or DE tuners - will see it up to 460 ish BHP.
The tuning mods are all ECU based and so do not show up on any form of routine inspection, thus your warrantee is safe.

Also from 2002 there have been much more options available
2) You cant get an opc to do this, though you can go to aftermarket tuners and have the larger K 24's installed if you want. However the K 16's in the basic turbo are adequate to 500bhp without over stressing them
3) i dont think there will be a 997 turbo as the 997 is only running for 2 years, but who knows..

I think the upgraded satnav system was on the 2003 model year cars onwards. The earlier satnav system took up all the spare space in the centre consol, the 2003 model year system was more compact and allowed for an empty din slot in front of the gearlever (very useful for mounting the control units for your licence protection armaments).
As Adam has said no one knows for sure on a 997tt, the smart money is they'll skip the 997 and the next tt will be based on the 998.

I know of one owner on here who runs a tiptronic due to health reasons, as he has proven his driven skills beyond doubt over many decades we forgive him though. As for the rest I would say it is mainly people who are city centre based and the turbo is their only car, which spends 90% of it's time in traffic. I don't know any one who uses a turbo as their second car that has gone the tiptronic route.

Hi fellas,
Was about to leap into Gallardo ownership from the 996 Targa but had a drive in Tip Turbo at weekend and blown away - am thinking about a Black Tipronic (like you said - it helps in town when it's your only car)- how hard do you think 996 Turbo values will get smacked when the 997 appears?

Good point about turbos as second cars tending to be manual. In gear acceleration of my '02 tip 996TT is the same as manual, changes are transparent, box learns quickly and accurately.
More importantly it is CONSISTANTLY performant and time after time giving the same results come rain or shine and I don't have to replace clutches.
Obviously in the open and on the twistys I miss the immediacy of a stick shift. But as soon as I hit a UK motorway I am happy with my choice again !

OPC are coming in at the mid £40k mark, the cheapest Targa on their nationwide site is £53,000 I think....so no change there. A couple of the independent dealers (I'm sure you know the ones) are talking late 40's which will be enough for me to take the bait....just as well we enter these things with our eyes open!
Mine is 2002, BLk/Blk, Man, 14k, sports seats, sports exhaust, 5 spoke alloys etc for reference.
