was at dealer today .. he showed me BMW GB email which said all sold.

BMW GB seem to be operating a central 'clearing' policy with no dealers being allowed to register demos, and cancelled orders being reallocated by BMW GB.

dealer said slim chance a car would be available.

he suggested speccing a car, putting in an "order" which requires a £1k fully refundable deposit - if car becomes available, then great.

but don't want a buy car I have never driven, even if the reviews are excellent.

I would take the e46 m3 over a 1M anyday.

Wow you're coolrolleyes

It's a refundable deposit, nothing to lose really. There are two 1Ms for sale on autotrader, why not look at them (doubt they'll let anybody test drive for fun though).

It looks nicer and with a decent aftermarket exhaust can be made to sound nice. Oh and did I mention that it's a proper M car?

And a proper 'M' car is? Something that goes like the proverbial off a shovel, with taught handling that talks, or something that looks pretty and sounds nice (with an aftermarket exhaust) ?

A CSL is probably a more real M car than a normal M3, and i don't think a CSL would see wich way a 1M went, do you?

An e46 M3 CSL will out handle and accelerate an 1M anyday in the right gear with the right driver. It's carbon Alpha N setup makes the whole thing sound a lot nicer too. People have been boosting the N54B30 for a while and you need intercooler/turbo upgrades to break ~360 bhp and outrun a CSL.

My apologies, let me explain. I don't doubt that around the 'Ring' say the CSL would be quicker. But as an everyday turnkey car....is it a better prospect than a 1M? I would like a CSL, but it would be a toy. Your comparison was with an E46 M3, because of looks and sound with an aftermarket exhaust, i don't think you're wanting an M car for the reason they were designed? I went to buy an M3 once, needed it as an everyday car. The lack of torque frustrated, i passed it by.

Even though the e46 M54B30 has more torque than a S54B32 low down, I would still prefer the M3 to a 330 as a daily driver! If you want torque get a V8. I did not mention handling as obviously the M3 will be better in the corners!

What's it like going from an e39 M5 to a e92 330d?

Well, it was a 130 (faster across country) then a 335d (kinder on a fuel card and didn't need 14k worth of warranty work) then the 330d (even kinder on the fuel card) but if i'm honest, bores the tits off me. Will pick up 1M when have convinced finance dept that its a 118d with a bodykit. biggrin

confused If put off by a perceived lack of torque, it would suggest that anything of that ilk wasn't for you anyway. Sir would probably be better off with a mapped 335d/535d.
At a level down (in every sense), I've had one that didn't have and one that has plenty, relatively. Neither has been a a real chore and the one without was ultimately more fun (even if for other reasons it didn't hit the mark).
An E46 M3 doesn't have much more torque than my ickle Focus but running costs & other considerations aside, it would be a no brain choice.

There's a discussion in another thread where (of course) everyone agrees with this. I wonder what sort of person buys cars like this without testing them?

To get the point of an M3, it needs revs, yes? I did say 'everyday' car. It didn't fit my bill. Then again, neither did the M5 AT 10 mpg. I can't be arsed with mapping, i would put money into better brakes before i went for an electronic fix.

I expressed an interest in the 1M back in (from memory) February/March and was sent a copy of the initial brochure when it became available. Due to a change in circumstances (new job that has increased my annual mileage a fair bit) I didn't pursue it further but out of the blue I got a call from my local dealer on Friday evening asking if I was still interested; when I said I thought they were pretty much sold out he said there still about 40 available and I got the impression he could get me one without too much trouble if I wanted.....

Nice one. I have no doubt it will be a fantastic car.
I have an E46 M3, and I imagine with the turbo's the 1M will feel quicker and be a lot more drivable everyday, despite what everyone else says.
Ive never been bothered about a CSL. rather have a 996 turbo for that money. My M3 is a great all rounder as I imagine the 1M to be. A stripped out overpriced CSL doesnt appeal to what i wanted a car for.
