Audi A8 is often reported as having a hard ride, so Jag is probably a comfier option.

Left-field suggestion - have you considered a Citroen C6? Same engine as in the Jag, but with Citroens hydro-pneumatic suspension.

And shoot me now, but the 520d (with the later more powerful engine, 172BHP I think) is a cracking good car too. Ok, not the nicest sounding, but decent punch, swift and will do 45+MPG without fail.

High thirties is the norm or 40 if you stay out of town. They certainly use less fuel than an S-Type with the same engine because being largely aluminium, they are a fair bit lighter.

I know the photo's are dodgy but they are nice cars, I know there are loads of other cars, just thought I'd suggest a newer car rather than an older car. Tons of nice diesels out there

My XJ is averaging 36, down to 32 if most of the tank is used around town. You can get a manual S-type, that would beat it, I reckon.

To answer the OP, I think 5 series is the answer to your question. my 530d Msport manual was comfy enough, averaged 39 in my ownership, up to 44 on a run. It was so uninspiring inside, I sold it after 3 months, though, the Jag is a much nicer place to be.
