E46 - Would faulty oil sensor cause EML to come on?

The engine management light came on on my 2001 318i Touring on Saturday.
Ever since I bought the car a month or so ago, the yellow oil light has come on whenever the car is started. I've checked the oil over and over again but the level seems fine and I've read that faults with the oil sensor are common on this model.
Could the fact that the oil sensor seems to be faulty have caused the EML to come on? Car appears to be running fine.
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.
