Had my 400 rolling roaded and made 168.9bhp at the fly, was advised by Austec to change the Cam, and have the heads refaced and valves recut.

So I will be embarking on this next month and was wondering if there is anything else worth changing whilst im there, apart from the obvious chain, venier pulley and followers.

I was actually very happy with the result as I thought it was a bit slow.

Was going to use the V8 developments MC1,anyone had any experience with these?

I'm no expert but I have seen a 400 with similar numbers caused by a blocked main cat. Pre-cat had escaped and was blocking the dustbin. Worth checking before embarking on an expensive cam change ?

What diagnostics point to the cam being the culprit apart from the loss of power ?

+1 !!

I had a pre-cat melt and found on top of main cat!! Get them to remove pre-cats since the manifolds are off!!

Also replace cam chain/followers (goes-without-saying???)

Check out oil pump & housing.

Check inlet trumpets are not loose!!

Change any flexible fuel injection flexible pipes.

I'm sure others will add to list??

You'd think so but IME it can't hurt mentioning it, anyway. You don't want to do the same job twice in the course of a few thousand miles...

pre cats are situated inside the exhaust mainfold, just after the point where the pipes go 4 into 1. They can come loose and find their way down the pipe onto the top of the main 'dustbin' cat which is inside the Y piece.

So, is this cam being hand-hewn by high-class hookers on a rate, snacking on fully-expensed Beluga caviar between shifts, from solid platinum? 'kin needs to be if not... eek

It definitely improves performance if the final finish on the cam surfaces is polished between the upper thighs of a 19-year-old virgin. I'd pay extra for that - especially if I could watch. Purely to ensure the quality of engineering, you understand.
