I had my XJ8 serviced in June - all seemed well.

Got a few amber reports - Rear fuel pipes corroded.
- Brake pads/discs corroded.
All need attention within 6 months. Fair enough.

I took my car for it's MOT today (I didn't have it done by Jaguar at the service date as this was before the date at which I could retain my current MOT expiry date). It passed but I was given an advisory.

The parking brake is only working at 16% efficiency. The MOT guy said that Jaguar should have checked this. He said take it back to them and tell them to fix it.

I got home and checked the report print out from the service and a parking brake check is not listed. Will it have come under the foot brake checks? I'm not actually sure if the Jag service centre had a rolling road.

The MOT guy said he didn't even think Jaguar had taken the wheels off.

Just wondering what others would do? Phone Jaguar and tell them it's got an advisory - but will they dislike the fact I've gone elsewhere for an MOT and try to get me to pay for the repair/adjustment?

Taking the wheel off wouldn't have helped

The parking brake is like the old mini shoe brakes inside the rear brake disk

Every now and again appy the hand brake to free the cables and cleen up the brakes

The wonder of dealer servicing. It depends what service you had, it's quite possible that they didn't take the wheels off (as per conversation from my Merc dealer when I queried what they were actually going to do -" It's a major service, sir, they take the wheels off......" Wow.

I don't use Jag dealers (because I don't have a Jag at the moment), but it's quite likely to be an 'at additional cost' item, if anything needs doing, on certain specified services. A bit like Merc charge extra for filters, plugs etc if the service sheet says required at that mileage/age.

You can but ask them, they might feel a twinge of guilt, then again.....scratchchin

Assuming it's an auto, do you actually use the parking brake?

I do apply it as I have done with all my previous automatics.

The MOT guy did ask if I'd noticed it failing to work properly. I replied that I rarely park on hills and always put the car in Park before applying the parking brake.

There was a thread on here a few weeks/months ago asking whether people use the parking brake on an auto. Many didn't, but those that did stressed that it is an absolute must.
