How to remove a dent?

A friend has a dent in his car caused by it being struck by a football! We were looking On the internet at ways to remove it ourselves before we take it to a body shop. There seem to be a variety of strange ways of removing dents on the Internet such as a hair dryer and a can of CO2!

Just wondering does this work? Or simply does anyone know the best way to remove dents at home without any fancy tools?

A picture would help....

Have used a suction cup thingy, i understand half a tennis ball also works but have not tried it.

Can the dent be accessed by removing any of the inner panels? if so remove em and just knock the dent out.
Failing that, you can get dent suckers, never used em but believe they work.
