DVLA stopped me selling car

Well not quite, but because i am in the process of getting my egistration put on retention, i cannot sell the car until i recieve the V5, MOT etc back along with permission to put original plates on.

A buyer called today to view, he arrived before and was taken back by the condition, how it looked etc. But could not buy as i could not give a time seeing as the DVLA can be hit and miss on turn around with reg transfers.

Knowing E39 sports dont sell easily i wonder if i will get another buyer.

So my question is, have you ever had a viewer be put off or not buy because you forgot to do something, ie clean the boot, make the cloth/leather more presentable or something out of your control like me, and forget you have no V5!

When did you apply / send to the DVLA?

I guess it depends on the level of trust you have with the buyer. When I bought my TVR it still had the private plate on it, transfer didnt come through for a few weeks. The seller sent me the revised tax disc and documents through the post and I had a new set of plates made up.

Put it this way the DVLA only probably ecieved my documents today! So i will be waiting a few weeks still before i can actually let her go.

Its terrible its the only key that doesnt register unless hit with a hammer. Terrible for an alienware laptop.

So the DVLA have not stopped you from selling your car... you did when you sent the V5 away when you put it up for sale?

IMHO the DVLA are a lot better than they used to be, I do not think it will take a few weeks.

a buyer came from a good hour away to pick up a car from me that we had done a deal on a few days before. he rings from out side my house
"hey, im here to pick up the RX"

"OH SHI...err, hello mate, i forgot im about 4hours away, gone for the weekend"

Just let it go and make the buyer sign something to say you are keeping the plate... Or most appropriate wait for new V5 in the new reg and fill in buyers details and sign and back date! I've always done that without any problems

So you didn't get your docs all sorted out before putting the car up for sale? And this is the DVLA's fault?

I imagine E39s are even harder to sell when the guy selling it doesn't even have a V5.

If you go to your local dvla office they will do it while you wait. Takes all of 10minutes!

It's well know that ideally take the plate off before you sell and it can take around 4 weeks
The other way is to sell the car with the plate but get the buyer to immediately transfer it back to you before sending off his portion of the v92 ...it does rely on trust
