Gas Fire - Glass
Discussion
We have an older Baxi Bermuda gas fire with the boiler behind. Works great and is in fact getting a service next week. The fire itself is seldom used and the boiler isn't used that heavily - it is in Yorkshire after all !!
What happens when you mix two dogs, a coffee table and a gas fire. After many years the glass has got broken in the front. I see you can get a 'glass and frame' replacement for £90 - but where do they get them prices.
I have lifted off the front and removed the frame - so easy even Mrs Mercs could have managed it. But what glass should go in it ? Is there a special fire glass, do we just want toughened glass, or a thicker standard glass (not greenhouse !) Likewise, as our maintenance guy said earlier at work - don't use perspex.
So, what glass needs to go back in the frame please ?

Had one of those in my first flat - the glass obviously gets VERY hot indeed (I expect it is a living flame effect fire?).
As I was interested I googled it for you :-)
and found this
www.stoveglass.net
and at a rough guess at the size of the glass of I reckon you'ld be looking at £60 or more including delivery - but try it with your own measurements.
So the BAXI price doesn't seem too bad.

Woweeee
Yes - just short of £60 for the exact size. So if you add the frame and heat tape as well it would be nearer the Baxi price - when another trader adds on some margin. But when in Yorskhire why pay for stuff you already have that is OK. Still a lot more than the maximum £25 I was hoping to pay.
Thanks
The boss went to a Baxi suppliers conference last week - we have been chosen as part of a new 'trial' to improve their supply chain. A lot of it seems logical. Making proper service kits that include relevant seals - rather than having to buy three items to service a boiler. Also standardised packaging - amongst many things. We supply a number of parts which should be obsolete, but demand, especially in the current climate means demand keeps remaining very strong.

Our dog hairs get everywhere. Admittedly it must have been two years since it was serviced. However when I lifted out the front to get to the glass frame holder I was surprised - it wasn't that bad. Mainly just a thick build up of dust.
What will be a surprise this time might be the cost of servicing. Changed plumber as the last one was involved in fitting next doors new boiler - which failed last winter in the extreme cold - whilst she was away. Lucky we caught the flood 10 minutes after it started. All because he had cut a corner in the installation ! So don't know how much the new boy will charge. Being a Yorskhireman who wears an old bobble hat (like we wore in the 60's / 70's) - I'm know the new guy is from the old 'fix and make do' brigade. He drives a Sherpa pickup - the newest part being his GasSafe sticker !
Looks like that link last night will be best for glass - bad week £.
